Local Expert Lecture: "Learning from Aliens" In-Person
Bruce Balick, Professor Emeritus of Astronomy at University of Washington, will present a talk on his area of expertise. (Bruce Balick | Department of Astronomy | University of Washington). There will be a Q&A after his talk. This is the continuation of an informal series of talks given by locals with expertise in a field.
Abstract: No one knows whether life exists elsewhere in the Universe. But even if we are completely alone, aliens have much to teach us about ourselves. We learn that humans are probably just as strange as inhabitants of most other planets.
Bio:
Balick joined the UW Astronomy Department in 1975. Subsequently he served as its chair, became active in UW faculty governance, and participated in the design of new instrumentation for Hubble. Since his retirement in 2014 Balick continues to publish research papers using data from both the James Webb and the Hubble Space Telescopes and to supervise astronomy undergraduates in research and public outreach.
