Civic 101 is an interactive workshop series exploring how our government works and various ways to engage at different levels. You can attend any or all of the three events!

State Government

With a focus on the three branches of state government, and using materials from Teach with TVW, this workshop explores how a bill becomes a law in Washington and how the public can track and participate in the process

Civic Engagement Program (CEP) | Mission

The Civic Engagement Program leads the Office of the Secretary of State’s effort to develop strategies and implement resources and programs that encourage disenfranchised, underserved, and marginalized communities’ participation in civic life throughout Washington.

Workshop facilitator | Michael Bowman

Michael Bowman came to the Office of the Secretary of State in April 2024 after spending the previous 15 years in higher education, with faculty appointments at The Evergreen State College in Olympia and Iowa State University in Ames, IA. Over that period, Michael taught undergraduate, teacher education, and doctoral courses in social foundations, social studies, histories of education, community and place-based education, participatory and historical research methods. Previously, Michael worked at the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle and in the Seattle Public Schools, where he first learned about the power of collaborative, place-based, and culturally-sustaining civic education alongside a diverse group of community mentors, families, teachers, and students. Michael loves the lands and waters of the Pacific Northwest, especially when he is with his wife, Lai, and their 8-year-old daughter, Zola

Programa de Participación Cívica (CEP) | Misión

El Programa de Participación Cívica lidera el esfuerzo de la Oficina del Secretario de Estado para desarrollar estrategias e implementar recursos y programas que fomenten la participación en la vida cívica de comunidades marginadas, desatendidas y con menos acceso en todo el estado de Washington.

Facilitador del taller | Michael Bowman

Michael Bowman llegó a la Oficina del Secretario de Estado en abril de 2024 después de haber pasado los 15 años anteriores en la educación superior, con nombramientos como profesor en The Evergreen State College en Olympia y en la Iowa State University en Ames, IA. Durante ese período, Michael enseñó cursos de pregrado, formación docente y doctorado en fundamentos sociales, estudios sociales, historias de la educación, educación comunitaria y basada en el lugar, y métodos de investigación participativos e históricos.

Anteriormente, Michael trabajó en la Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle y en las Escuelas Públicas de Seattle, donde aprendió por primera vez sobre el poder de la educación cívica colaborativa, basada en el lugar y culturalmente sostenible, junto a un diverso grupo de mentores comunitarios, familias, docentes y estudiantes.
